Although I prefer petrol, is it worth considering a Euro 6 diesel simply to increase the choice? My annual mileage totals 15,000-20,000, mixed. PM You could justify a diesel to increase choice and cut costs, but who wants to listen to one rattling away under the bonnet while you’ve got the top down? 25 Times Racing Teams Cheated So Well They Deserved Their Trophies

The term ‘cheating’ doesn’t really apply to racing. Now, before anyone starts complaining and lecturing us about the purity of true champions, let us explain. Every race team out there has to push as far as they possibly can in order to win. This doesn’t just mean pushing the car and the driver to their limits, but also the interpretation of the rules and how the regulations are applied to the cars they put on the track. In the words of Darrell Waltrip, after he got caught for using nitrous oxide in the 1976 Daytona 500: “If you don’t cheat, you look like an idiot. If you do it and you don’t get caught, you look like a hero. If you do it and get caught, you look like a dope. Put me in the category where I belong.” Of course, we don’t condone cheating, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that the real trick to winning in motorsports is figuring out how far the rules can be bent without breaking them. After all, in motorsports, another word for cheating is ‘innovation.’ When it comes to finding tenths on the track, the guys in the pits, the designers, engineers, strategists, and mechanics are collect...

Lasersaur That Cuts 1/2″ Plywood And 10mm Acrylic (Pew-Pew)

Remember when building your own 3D printer was a big deal? We’re starting to think that building your own laser cutter might be the next hot topic. Boasting a 16,000 square-foot facility, the Dallas Makerspace is an impressive collaboration of local artists, engineers, makers, and thinkers. Recently they embarked on building a serious laser cutting machine. They chose to go with the an open-hardware design rather than buying an off-the-shelf unit. What they built is based on the Lasersaur plans. (Another popular open-source build is the buildlog.net unit.) They ended up with a huge 24″ by 48″ cutting bed and with a laser tube rated for 100 watts continuous output. It can cut 1/2″ plywood and 10mm acrylic with ease. The entire machine is built from 20mm Misumi aluminum t-slot extrusions, making more like a giant erector set then a commercial built machine. We hadn’t seen too many of the Lasersaur builds out in the wild, so we thought you might like to see one too. Now, before you start ordering parts to build your own, you should know that a top of the line build like this will run you about $7-10k. But by comparison if you were to go with something with the same cutting area and...

ABB has launched Dodge Food Safe mounted ball bearings, which are designed to withstand caustic, high-pressure

ABB has launched Dodge Food Safe mounted ball bearings, which are designed to withstand caustic, high-pressure cleaning and sanitation processes. The new bearings are the first industrial bearings to achieve the IP69 water protection rating without the use of an end cover, making them ideal for use in the food and beverage industry, where equipment must be aggressively cleaned. They are the only bearings to carry a warranty against failure due to water ingress. Consumers and stringent health regulations increasingly challenge food manufacturers to guarantee higher food safety and hygiene standards. However, harsh chemicals and high-pressure sprays used in clean-in-place (CIP) procedures can quickly deteriorate product reliability. ABB’s Food Safe bearings are resilient against these cleaning agents. The bearings’ 100 percent stainless steel insert design combined with a revolutionary top coat, KleenTec, offers superior protection against corrosion. The smooth housing without a grease fitting minimizes contamination harbor points and is easy to clean. The bearing is sealed and lubricated for life to minimize maintenance costs. To prevent grease wash-out, the leading c...

Kentucky stops requiring conceal carry permits | Ledger Independent

Several new laws are set to go into into effect Thursday in Kentucky, including a change to the conceal carry law and new requirements for pregnant employees. Senate Bill 150 will now allow Kentuckians who are 21 years of age and older to carry a concealed handgun without needing a concealed carry license. “Persons age 21 or older, and otherwise able to lawfully possess a firearm, may carry concealed firearms or other concealed deadly weapons without a license in the same locations as persons with valid licenses issued under KRS 237.110,” the bill states. Mason County Sheriff Patrick Boggs said he is a huge proponent for the Second Amendment, however is rather on the fence when it comes to SB150. His main concern is that it will no longer require people to undergo training in order to be able to conceal their weapon. With the current system, Boggs believes concealed carry permits deter a lot of crime, and also keeps law enforcement officers safe when engaging with any member of the public. “For us, when we run a license plate, it comes back if the owner of that vehicle has a concealed carry permit so we know walking up to that vehicle that there is a high likelihood of a conceal...

Planned Obsolescence Isn’t A Thing, But It Is Your Fault

The common belief is that big companies are out to get the little people by making products that break after a short period, or with substantially new features or accessories that make previous models obsolete, requiring the user to purchase a new model. This conspiracy theory isn’t true; there’s a perfectly good explanation for this phenomenon, and it was caused by the consumers, not the manufacturers. When we buy the hottest, shiniest, smallest, and cheapest new thing we join the wave of consumer demand that is the cause of what often gets labelled as “Planned Obsolescence”. In truth, we’re all to blame for the signals our buying habits send to manufacturers. Dig in and get your flamewar fingers fired up. The idea makes sense; some bigwigs in marketing realized that if they sell a product that will expire, break, or become unserviceable after a certain period of time (long enough that people won’t complain), then the consumer will return and buy a newer, better product. Why build a product that lasts a long time and only get one sale when you can build a product that breaks after a few years and get a few repeat sales? We can point to microwaves that are older than we are that...

Sign up here to get the day’s top stories delivered straight to your inbox. Thread rolling is a cold forging process that can be enacted upon any malleable metal. Distinct from other types of threading methods such as chasing, cutting, and grinding, thread rolling is the desired process for creating exact, unvarying, level thread structures. Although there are a broad variety of thread rollers in production, all employ a system of matching hardened steel dies and reforming circular diameter surfaces into threads. To accomplish this, a cylindrical apparatus, also known as a blank, goes into the machine and the dies either revolve (cylindrical dies) or counter (flat dies) to create threads. Flat die thread rolling utilizes two dies: one static and one mobile. The stationary die and the moving die are positioned opposite one another. During the forward movement of the machine, a thread is rolled on one blank at a time. The diameter of the blank die and the distance between the faces of the dies at the completion of the machine’s stroke det...
